Contract - not for small projects/ companies
Keep it simple. 
Get brief 

Pricing 
See them/Skype etc. Ask budget and consider/negotiate. Write out estimate* for the job and itemise that it will take *so long* to complete. Balance on supply of final files. Copyright** will be released on FULL and final payment. Any additional work charged at X per hour. Kill point (project killed before completion, all fees will remain chargeable to that point.) Send client full breakdown of what you have been asked and terms as itemised on last slide. Purchase order is legal proof of what you have been asked.

With a new client your terms should be 50% up front with a purchase order.
Copyright - cease and desist order if client uses work before you are paid in full.

Your invoice
invoice no, date, reference (purchase order no), client
supply sort code and account number

don't start work without a contract
don't blindly accept their terms
anticipate negotiation
