Wayfinding: Meeting 00 - Individual initial ideas

After brainstorming a few initial thoughts with my group, we all decided to meet up next week and for then have a bit of research and initial ideas we'd gathered ourselves.

Adaptability
One of the considerations we took note of was the adaptability of the way finding system. The uni building may grow and expand and room locations may change over time. In addition to this, open days are held and having a way finding system that can be easily altered costing little time, money or effort would be ideal to suit a need for change.

The above pictures rely on seperate components that can be moved, adjusted and displayed in different combinations, whether that be seperated by letter, word room etc. The system to display these would also be interesting to work with - creating a set of frames/ shelves to hold the components.

Layers
I came across this style of display while researching and I like the layers incorporated in these systems. This system can also be adapted/changed when needed, if the components were separated.

In the first picture the signage is accompanied by a piece of art work - this would be ideal to showcase students artwork considering we are an art university. Other things to mention about this style is the cost - using planks of wood or even MDF to paint and print on would reduce costs as the materials are so cheap.

Other

Again linking to the idea of reducing costs and cheap materials - using this chipboard as a large scale system to be put on blank walls would lend itself to the university's art environment. Drawbacks of this are that it takes up a lot of space on walls - this would mean less space to display artwork etc.

The above picture got me to think about a more abstract concept of way finding. Using more simplistic but 3D elements within the system would be a cool idea - these icons for example are minimal but effective. These could even be made using a laser cutter - equipment we already have within the university.

As a way to present these to my group and a way to practice putting together presentations I quickly put all the pictures into a PDF document to show. I can also talk about the notes I have made in this post and then within my group we can discuss which ideas to progress with further.

Briefing: Studio Brief 2

Thursday February 22nd

Studio Brief 02
You will arrange yourselves into groups of 5. Consider who you are best working with in areas of strength, abilities and performance.
THE BRIEF:
We are now heading toward a new image as Leeds Arts University and we are expanding into a new extended facility (building). A new logo has been created by Peter and Paul in Sheffield. This brief is to create a wayfinding and imagery for the building and the various courses and facilities. I will attempt to gain plans and elevations to aid this. The work should cover all areas of this wayfinding and human interaction and will be to proposal level. A rationale of who and where we can connect with staff, visitors and students.
This investigation should be as wide and exciting as achievable, there are NO restrictions and how this is achieved is down to research and awareness of what wayfinding is, externally accessed maybe, do not get bogged down with detail unless you feel it is important. Consider BIG IDEAS and try to be innovative, creative in all areas. As mentioned, manufacturing is NOT essential, concepts that cover the brief in the most 'fresh' creative and reasoned way. Your presentation at the end of this can be pdf (deck,,,if you aren't aware of this term, find out).
Presentations are up to the groups how they are presented and a considered 'rationale' is needed. This is a really 'native' brief and you will need to note all work on your PPP Blog as you go with a final post that sums up your individual take on this project together with your take on the 'collaborative' aspects of this brief.
Mandatory Requirements
Evidence of research into appropriate online social/professional/creative networks. This should include evidence of engagement with networking activities, online presence and contribution to identified sites. These should be included a links on your PPP blog- Please label them clearly
Responses to this brief should be recorded on your PPP Blog and should be labeled with the module code and appropriate 'Studio Brief 2'.
Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that all work for this brief has been presented and labelled in line with these guidelines by the submission deadline. Work that is incorrectly labelled, posted to the wrong blog or is in anyway unclear or inaccessable will not be assessed.
Five heads are better than one as long as they communicate. You will now have the luxury of six pairs of hands. How will you use them effectively? You will need to consider the following:
  • What skills and services do you have to offer individually and as a group?
  • Who is your target market?
  • What form will your showcase take?
  • What are your costs, charges and financial considerations?
  • How will you structure your collective?
  • Who will be responsible for what?
  • How will you promote your showcase? To who? Using what media?
  • Is it set in a physical location ? then where?
  • How will you manage communication through the group?
You must make reference to the module resources materials, books and web sites to demonstrate your understanding of basic marketing and business principles.
Responses to this brief should be recorded on your PPP Blog and should be labeled with the module code and appropriate 'Studio Brief Number'.
Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that all work for this brief has been presented and labelled in line with these guidlines by the submission deadline. Work that is incorrectly labelled, posted to the wrong blog or is in anyway unclear or inaccessable will not be assessed
You should ensure that any material, discussions and reflections generated during taught sessions, workshop and group critiques are evidenced for assessment.
A 10 minute Deck/pdf or similar presentation (including 3 minutes of Q&A)
Appropriate visual aids and printed material to support your presentation.
Evidence of the research and development of your presentation and visual material should be posted to your PPP blog and labelled with the module code. You should also post pdf versions of your presentation, notes and handouts to your PPP blog. Please save a PDF for submission.
